Ingrid Fiksdahl King maintained her life-long studio practice until she passed away in Berkeley, California in 2023. Her paintings captured landscapes and human bodies in motion. Fascinated by the beauty of voluminous shapes, King’s lines attempted to “catch” spatial relationships within the overall structure of the canvas. The resulting layered composition of gestural line work serves as scaffolding for abstract fields of color. She could be found here, at the Sea Ranch, “catching” a moment on a rock before the shadows shifted: comparing the raw coastline to a body in movement.
Throughout her distinguished career, painting remained the essential thread that connected King’s various contributions to the field of architecture. She considered painting to be a critical component of her creative process: where she explored the relationship between environment and structure.
