Third Rock
Max Occupancy 6 people
This iconic, spacious and sunny home designed by Obie Bowman FAIA reflects the best of The Sea Ranch (TSR). Enjoy peaceful privacy, luxury living, spectacular ocean views and wildlife on one of TSR’s most desirable meadows just steps from the famous Bluff Trail, Shell Beach, TSR Lodge and other TSR amenities.
Located on what locals refer to as Architects Row, Third Rock, with its ocean views, is tucked into the wildlife-filled meadow that hugs the oceanfront bluffs. Sophisticated, simple, natural and spacious, it exemplifies The Sea Ranch guiding principle of “living lightly on the land.”
The primary living area stretches out beneath a vaulted ceiling with plenty of cozy seating and windows, windows, windows. A large double-sided fireplace separates the living room from the dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. Through glass doors, an outdoor deck and adjacent lawn serve as a spectacular outdoor entertainment area or a quiet space for savoring morning coffee.
Enjoy a private outdoor hot tub, wi-fi, a TV to access streaming services, a record player and carefully curated collection of classic vinyl, games, puzzles and more. Plus, easy access to the bluff trail (10mins), swimming and pickleball at Moonraker Recreational Center (15mins), private beaches (10mins), The Sea Ranch Lodge (20mins) and other TSR amenities.
Within Third Rock’s well-appointed 1,730-square-feet, you’ll find distinctive vintage furniture from Design Research, Alvar Alto, Isamu Noguchi and the original Sea Ranch Lodge; vintage fabrics by Marimekko; and period artwork by Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, James Rosenquist, Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman and Sister Corita Kent. Contemporary pieces include works by Pae White, Catherine Opie, Jim Iserman, Elliot Huntley, Ruben Ochoa, Ai Weiwei and Barbara Stauffacher Solomon.
Two prominent rock formations rise out of the surrounding meadow, making the home a metaphorical “third rock”. Originally known as Sea Meadow (The Brugler House), Third Rock was designed by Obie Bowman FAIA in 1983 and with its composition shingles and an earth-covered triangular roof, it was his first living roof design. It was recognized for outstanding achievement in design with an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Redwood Empire Chapter (1986); a Merit Award for Excellence in Design from the AIA California Council (1987); and a Western Homes Award of Merit from the AIA and Sunset Magazine (1987-1988).
