Weekend Retreat: A Sense Of Place

March 24 - 26, 2023

The Sea Ranch Lodge presents A Sense of Place: Deepening Our Connection to the Sacred—a Weekend Retreat at The Sea Ranch with Poet, Musician, Maskmaker & Storyteller Will Clipman.

Premise

Why do we live where we live? Some people never stray far from where they were born; others venture far and wide in search of their sacred ground. Assuming one is fortunate enough to have a choice--and recognizing that many around the world do not--do we merely end up somewhere by chance, or do we intentionally choose a place to call home because of a deeper spiritual resonance with the landscape, skyscape, flora, fauna and human presence of a particular environment?

Process

Through a synthesis of indigenous world percussion, personal storytelling, poetry and maskmaking, we will creatively explore our connection to the nature (the sea, sky, land, weather, plants and animals) and the human nature (the ancient and modern indigenous inhabitants as well as the more recent historical arrivals) that are unique to Sea Ranch, and which contribute to our sense of place and our grounding in the sacred.

Hands-on Creativity

  • Heart Beats: drumming and percussion
  • Lifecasting: plaster bandage maskmaking
  • Why You Are Here: personal storytelling
  • Mythic Persona: ten-step guided poem

Cultural Enrichment

  • visits to Kashia Pomo mounds
  • research on indigenous peoples, from prehistoric to the modern Kashia Pomo

Outcomes

Our intention is to deepen, expand and enrich our connection to the sacred through a synthesis of hands-on creativity and immersion in the unique nature and human nature of Sea Ranch. We will emerge from this high-energy exploratory weekend with a reawakened awareness of both our inner spiritual resources and the outer physical splendor of Sea Ranch. By integrating our personal sense of place with the sacred space we’ve chosen to call home, we will create a synergistic momentum that will carry us forward into a new and profoundly elevated experience of community and belonging. And of course, we will have serious fun: an uplifting and joyful time, but with a point!

Logistics

Venue: retreat activities will take place in the home studio of co-presenter Susan Martin, augmented with outdoor activities around the Sea Ranch property and vicinity

Expected attendance is intimate and the maximum is 15 attendees.
